Primarily the WI offers women many opportunities to extend their lives with the
support and friendship of others. Members can broaden their horizons by going on outings and taking up new skills and interests,
either through individual WIs or the Federation.
Every WI has a monthly meeting with a speaker or demonstration and many
organise other events for members between meetings,
such as pub-lunch walks, craft classes or interest groups. Monthly meetings are usually held in the local village hall.
There are also opportunities to get
involved in topical public affairs issues that can really "make a difference" to
the lives of women locally, nationally and internationally. The WI campaigns regularly on a
huge range of topics that have been put forward and discussed by
members. More than 600 subjects are listed in the
NFWI Public Affairs handbook, 'Speaking Out', including
national identity cards, transportation of live animals, modern apprenticeships
and housing developments on brownfield sites.
Have a look at the Nearest WI section
to identify WIs near you that meet at a suitable time of day. Each WI is unique, offering different activities and speakers
to suit its current membership. It is up to each member to choose her own level of participation. You are welcome to visit one or two
before making a decision.
More information is available from the Office.
| Behind the officers in the photo is the OFWI tapestry, hung on the wall of the meeting room. This tapestry was made to celebrate the Federation's 70th birthday in 1989 and was updated in 2004 for the 85th birthday. If you are visiting the office at any time, perhaps for a meeting or a workshop, try to see the tapestry, shown here in closer detail. |
Shown below is the piece in the centre which was worked by Brenda Poulter of Harwell WI which incorporates the National Chairman's badge as Agnes Salter was Chairman at that time. Agnes was an OFWI member of Stoke Lyne at the time of her Chairmanship, and their members worked the badge itself.
